Remove author from a Word document

Creator and lastModifiedBy are two separate Word properties. Both are removed when present. Names in comments, tracked revisions, visible text, headers and embedded resources are preserved; metadata removal is not an identity-removal service for all document content.

How to use this tool

  1. Select a genuine .docx Word document. Renamed text/Markdown and older .doc files are not supported DOCX packages.
  2. Review the Author and Last modified by properties, along with comments and revisions.
  3. Generate a metadata-only copy, or explicitly choose supported review-copy options if needed.
  4. Download the new document and open it in Word to review its text and appearance.

A fictional before-and-after example

Before: A fictional DOCX stores Author: Example Author and Last modified by: Example Reviewer.

After: Those properties are removed and checked again in the reconstructed package.

Illustrative example. A name in the document text, a header, comments or retained revisions can remain.

Supported formats and processing budgets depend on the tool. View limits · Understand the limitations.

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS

Before you check.

Will comment authors also be removed?

Default metadata cleaning preserves comments and revision authors. You can separately remove comments or accept/reject supported revisions using the explicit review-copy options. Names in ordinary text and other content can remain.

Does a clean copy mean my file is safe?

No. We remove only supported metadata and list what remains. Visible content and other unsupported information may still reveal private details.

Which files can I check?

JPG, JPEG, PNG, static WebP and supported HEIC photos; PDFs; DOCX, XLSX and PPTX Office files; and supported MP4/MOV videos. The screenshot editor accepts JPG, PNG and static WebP. Batches allow up to 10 files and 100 MB total. See Supported formats for each tool’s limits.
